The historical context refers to Communism, the 1905 revolution, which in the end leads to the mass emigration of Jewry.

Tevye, who is mentioned in the title, is a poor milkman and the father of five daughters, whom he wants to marry off. However, all daughters, who seek true love, do not want to accept any of the matchmaker’s choices. Tevye constantly faces the question: What is more important: sticking to traditions or happiness of his daughters? Meanwhile, Anatevka Jews get to know that they have to leave the town.
