A description of Kasrylevka town, the play however is not helpful when it comes to the actual geographical whereabouts of the town, so don’t go searching the maps, because it was made up by Sholem Aleichem. Most of the residents are poor, but managed to keep their zest for life.
From the very first beginning, Sholem Aleichem is bringing out a whole variety of characters from Kasrylevka. We meet a grouchy owner of a restaurant and learn right away that his wife is an even bigger nagger. Later on, the two best-known characters ever created by Aleichem come to the light: Tevye the Dairyman and Menaem Mendel are two completely different people. Tevye the Dairyman is a hardworking, down to earth farmer. On the other hand, Menachem Mendel is a daydreamer and, as Yiddish beautifully describes such people, he is “luftmensch.” You can only imagine the cooperation of those two can only lead to calamity and money loss. But with Sholem Aleichem one thing is sure, you can lose everything but still keep the most important thing, the humanity.
